Die Geschichte der Ortschaft Ballinskelligs (Baile an Sceilg - die Stadt des schroffen Felsen) geht bis ins 5. Jahrhundert zurück und ist eng mit der Geschichte der Mönche auf Skellig Michael verbunden. Dieser Teil des heutigen Kerry gehörte einst zum Königreich Desmond, dessen Könige dem Clan der MacCarthy Mórs (die großen MacCarthys) entstammten. Das Turmhaus auf einer schmalen Landzunge wurde von den MacCarthys im 16. Jahrhundert gebaut, zum Schutz gegen Piraten und um Gebühren von Handelsschiffen einzuheben. Das Königreich wurde nach dem Kampf von Kinsale 1602 aufgelöst, bei dem auch das alte gälische Irland ein Ende fand. Aber bis heute gehört die Gegend um Ballinskelligs zur Gaeltacht-Region Uíbh Ráthaigh, in der Gälisch die vorherrschende Sprache ist.
1874 wurde von Tor Bay, Neuschottland, Kanada, zum Strand von Ballinskelligs ein Telegrafenkabel verlegt. Die zugehörige Kabelstation wurde 1923 geschlossen und später demoliert.
The history of the village of Ballinskelligs (Baile an Sceilg - the town of the craggy rock) dates back to the 5th century and is closely knitted to the monks on Skellig Michael. This part of today's Kerry once belonged to the Kingdom of Desmond, which was ruled by kings emanated from the clan of the MacCarthy Mórs (the Great MacCarthys). The tower house on a narrow headland was built by the MacCarthys in the 16th century as protection against pirates and to charge a tariff from merchant ships. The kingdom was dissolved after the Battle of Kinsale in 1602, that also brought an end to the old Gaelic Ireland. But until today the area around Ballinskellig belongs to the Gaeltacht region Uíbh Ráthaigh, where Gaelic is the predominant language.
In 1874 a telegraphy cable was laid from Tor Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada, to the beach of Ballinskelligs. The attached cable station was closed in 1923 and later demolished.
