Kinsale (Cionn tSáile - das Kap des Meeres) hat seinen Ursprung in einem Kloster, das der Hl. Multose (mo-Elte-og, mein kleiner Eltin) im 6. Jahrhundert bei der Mündung des Flusses Bandon gründete. Die geschützte Lage der Klostersiedlung bot die idealen Voraussetzungen für einen Fischerhafen. Auch die Anglo-Normannen, die Irland im 12. Jahrhundert erobert hatten, erkannten die Bedeutung, befestigten Kinsale und bauten den Hafen aus. Gegen Ende des Neunjährigen Kriegs (1594 - 1603), ein Aufstand der Iren gegen die Englische Herrschaft, erhielten die Aufständischen Unterstützung von Spanien, das sich schon seit 1585 im Krieg mit England befand. Die Engländer konnten jedoch bei der Schlacht von Kinsale die Rebellion niederschlagen und die Spanische Aramda vertreiben. Um 1690 war Kinsale ein Schauplatz während des Kriegs von James II gegen Wilhelm von Oranien. Wilhelm gewann und die Vorherrschaft der Protestanten über die Katholiken Irlands war besiegelt. Bis zur Gründung des Irischen Freistaats 1921, war Kinsale eine wichtige Garnisonsstadt für die Königliche Marine. Heutzutage ist Kinsale ein beliebter Yachthafen, ein vielbesuchtes Touristenziel und das südliche Ende des Wild Atlantic Ways.

Kinsale (Cionn tSáile - the headland of the sea) has its origin in a monastery that was founded by St. Multose (mo-Elte-og, my little Eltin) in the 6^th century close to the mouth of the river Bandon. The protected location of the monastic settlement offered the ideal preconditions for a fishing harbour. The Anglo-Normans that had conquered Ireland in the 12^th century also were aware of its importance, fortified Kinsale and expanded the harbour. At the end of the Nineyear War (1594 - 1603), a rebellion of the Irish against the British rulers, the rebels got support from Spain that already had been in war with England since 1585. However, England could put down the rebellion at the Battle of Kinsale and drove off the Spanish Armada. About 1690 Kinsale was a theater of war during the war between James II and Wilhelm of Orange. Wilhelm won and the predominance of Protestants over Catholics in Ireland was sealed. Until the founding of the Irish Freestate in 1921 Kinsale was an important garrison town for the Royal Navy. Today, Kinsale is a popular yacht harbour, a much visited tourist destination and the southern end of the Wild Atlantic Way.
