Knightstown (Baile an Ridire) ist mit knapp 250 Einwohnern die größte Stadt auf Valentia Island. Die Stadt wurde in den 1830ern von Maurice FitzGerald, dem 18. Ritter von Kerry, gegründet. Die Bedeutung der Stadt wuchs, als in den 1860ern das erste Telegrafenkabel nach Amerika verlegt wurde und die Büros der Kabelgesellschaft hier gebaut wurden. Die protestantische Kirche wurde ebenfalls in den 1860ern hierher verlegt und eine Rettungsbootstation (großes gelbes Haus rechts) errichtet. Das Hotel Valentia (großes weißes Gebäude) öffnete um 1880 seine Pforten. Eine Fähre verbindet Knightstown in den Sommermonaten mit dem Festland, die Pendler und Touristen hin und her bringt.
Wir parken unser Auto am Hafen und folgen dann grob dem in einer Schautafel beschriebenen Weg zu den Sehenswürdigkeiten der Stadt.
Knightstown (Baile an Ridire) is with a population of almost 250 the largest town on Valentia Island. The town was founded in the 1830s by Maurice FitzGerald, the 18th Knight of Kerry. The importance of the town grew after the first telegraphy cable to America was laid and the offices of the cable company were built here. The Protestant church was also moved to the town in the 1860s and a lifeboat station (large yellow house to the right) was established. The Hotel Valentia (large white house) opened its doors about 1880. During the summer months a ferry connects Knightstown with the mainland, shipping commuters and tourists from and to.
We park our car at the harbour and then roughly follow the trail to the sights of the town as described by a panel.
