Kabelstation / Cable Station

1868 wurde die einfache Relaisstation in der Foilhammerum Bucht aufgelassen und in Knightstown eine neue Station errichtet. Hier arbeiteten in Spitzenzeiten über 220 Personen, um die täglich etwa 3000 Nachrichten von und nach Amerika zu bearbeiten. 1966 wurde der Kabelbetrieb eingestellt und damit wurden auch die Büros geschlossen - ein schwerer Schlag für die Wirtschaft von Valentia Island.
2016 wurde die Valentia Transatlantik Kabel Stiftung gegründet, mit dem Ziel, Geld und Ressourcen für die Förderung des wissenschaftlichen Erbe und für die Öffentlichkeitsarbeit aufzutreiben. 2023 suchte die Stiftung bei der UNESCO an, um den Weltkulturerbe-Status für das Transatlantik Kabel Ensemble (bestehend aus der Valentia und der Heart's End Kabelstation) zu erlangen.
In 1868 the simple relay station in Foilhammerum Bay was closed and a new station in Knightstown was built. At peak times more then 220 persons worked here to handle the about 3000 daily messages. Cable operation ceased in 1966 and also the offices were closed for good - a heavy blow for the economics of Valentia Island.
In 2016 the Valentia Transatlantic Cable Foundation was established "with the objective of the raising and application of money and other resources to advance the scientific heritage of, and community development". In 2023 the Foundation submitted the Transatlantic Cable Ensemble (consisting of the Valentia and the Heart's End cable stations) to the UNESCO to be recognized as World Heritage Property.
