Leacanabuaile Steinfort / Leacanabuaile Stone Fort

(2012-08-20)

The second ruin is Leacanabuaile Stone Fort (Leaca na Buaile - the slope of the summer cow pasture) that is only a short walking distance away. It was built in the 9th or 10th century A. D. and was not an actual fort but a fortified farmstead of a landowner. This stone fort has extra strong walls, most likely because there are two chambers hidden in them. One can only be accessed by an underground passage. And the fort already has a drain from the main house to the outside.
