Ahamore Abtei / Ahamore Abbey

Auf der etwa 30 Hektar großen Gezeiteninsel Abbey Island stehen die Überreste der Ahamore Abtei (Mainistir Achaidh Mhóir). Sie soll vom Hl. Fionán im 6. Jahrhundert gegründet worden sein, die heutigen Überreste stammen vermutlich von einer Augustiner Abtei aus dem Mittelalter. Die Faktenlage ist aber sehr dünn.
Auf dem Friedhof neben der Abtei befindet sich die Familiengruft der O'Connells, in der unter anderem Mary O'Connell (1778 - 1836), die Frau von Daniel O'Connell, begraben liegt.
On the tidal island Abbey Island with about 30 hectares in size there stand the remains of Ahamore Abbey (Mainistir Achaidh Mhóir). It is said that St. Fionán built it in the 6th century, the still existing ruins are probably from an Augustinian abbey from Medieval times. The evidences however are very sparse.
On the cemetery beside the abbey there is the family tomb of the O'Connells in which among others Mary O'Connell (1778 - 1836), the wife of Daniel O'Connell, is interred.
