Swords Burg / Swords Castle

Die Burg wurde als Wohnsitz für John Comyn, den ersten Anglo-Normannischen Erzbischof von Dublin, um 1200 gebaut und war das Verwaltungszentrum der Besitztümer des Erzbischofs und seiner Nachfolger. Als der Erzbischof im 14. Jahrhundert seinen Wohnort in den Süden von Dublin verlegte, verlor die Burg ihre Bedeutung. Während der nächsten Jahrhunderte hatte sie verschiedene Besitzer, welche die Burg teilweise restorierten und zum Wohnen oder auch nur als Garten nutzen. 1985 erwarb die Stadt Dublin die Burg.

Wir besuchen die Burg zum ersten Mal 2003, doch es sind gerade umfangreiche Renovierungsarbeiten im Gange. Als wir 16 Jahre später wiederkommen, können wir die Burg endlich näher besichtigen.

The castle was built around 1200 as the residence of John Comyn, the first Anglo-Norman archbishop of Dublin, and was the administrative centre of the properties of the archbishop and his successors. When the archbishop moved his residence to the south of Dublin, the castle lost its importance. During the next centuries it had different owners who partially restored the castle and used it from dwelling to gardening. In 1985 the city of Dublin acquired the castle.

We visited the castle in 2003 for the first time, but extensive reconstruction works are in progress. When we come back again 16 years later, we finally can have a closer look at the castle.
