Vor dem 19. Jahrhundert war Ballyvaughan ein Fischerdorf. Im 19. Jahrhundert wurde der Handel mit Galway ausgebaut und auch das Pier mehrfach neu gebaut. Heute hat die Stadt zwei Piers, die immer noch von Fischern, aber auch von Touristen für Bootstouren, Tauchgänge oder andere Wassersportarten verwendet werden.

Before the 19^th century Ballyvaughan was a fishing village. During the 19^th century the trade with Galway was extended and the pier was reconstructed several times. Today the town has two piers that are still used for fishing, but also by tourists for boat tours, scuba diving or other kinds of water sports.
