Corcomroe Abbey

Die Abtei von Corcomroe (Mainistir Chorco Modhruadh, bekannt auch als "Hl. Maria der fruchtbaren Steine") wurde im Jahre 1194 als Zisterzienserkloster von Dónal Mór Ua Briain gegründet. Obwohl das Tal, in dem die Abtei steht, für den Burren recht furchtbar ist, reichte es doch auf längere Sicht nicht zum Erhalt einer vollen Mönchsgemeinde. Der O'Brien Clan unterstütze die Abtei auch nach der Auflösung der Mönchsklöster im Jahre 1540 - vermutlich aber eher zur Absicherung der Grenzen ihres Herrschaftsgebietes.
Bemerkenswert im Inneren der Abtei ist ein Abbild von Conor na Siúdaine Ua Briain, Enkel von Dónal Mór und ebenfalls ein Gönner der Abtei.
The abbey of Corcomroe (Mainistir Chorco Modhruadh, also known as "St. Mary of the Fertile Rock") was founded in 1194 as Cistercian abbey by Dónal Mór Ua Briain. Although the valley in which the abbey is located is quite fertile for the Burren, it was not enough to sustain a full community of monks for a longer time. The O'Brien clan supported the abbey even after friaries were closed down in 1540 - but most likely to secure the borders of their dominion.
Remarkable on the inside of the abbey is the effigy of Conor na Siúdaine Ua Briain, grandson of Dónal Mór and also a benefactor of the abbey.
