In 1172, the Norman De Lacy had built in Trim (Baile Átha Troim) his castle at the side of the Boyne, which was finished in 1220. The materials were specifically imported from France. Cromwell destroyed the castle in 1649, but still it is supposed to be the largest and most well preserved Norman castle of Ireland.
