Navan

(2017-07-18)

After the Norman conquering of Ireland in the 12th century, Meath was ruled by Hugh de Lacy. His liegeman Jocelyn de Angulo secured an important ford across the River Boyne by a fort that developed into the town of Navan (an Uaimh, the cave). Under de Angulo Navan became an important market town, the royal charter allowed the collection of taxes for all sold goods. De Angulo got the title of Baron of Navan, his descendant, the Nangle family, continued the title. After Oliver Cromwell conquered the town, the Catholic family Nangle moved to foreign countries. Francis Nangle, the 23rd and last Baron of Navan, served in the Austrian imperial army and died in 1781 childless in Vienna, which erased the title.

The economic importance of Navan continued under the Protestant rulers. The Boyne Navigation Canal (at the beginning of the 18th century) and fifty years later the railway supported that development. At the beginning of the 20th century Navan became the county town of Meath (which had formerly been Trim). In 1970 zinc and lead deposits were found near Navan, that are mined by Tara Mines (the largest zinc mine in Europe).
