On the Hill of Tara (Teamhair) facts and fantasy of Irelands heritage mix. Stone Age people used it as a burial site and it was a pagan place of worship, before King Cormac Mac Airt built his castle in the 3rd century on it. From now on here were the centre of power and the meeting place of the legendary Fenians, the fighters of Cormac (song). With the rise of Christianity Tara lost its importance and was abandoned in 1022. It was not before 1843 that Tara again became a symbol of the Irish nationalism, when Daniel O'Connell held here his largest gathering to achieve Ireland's independence.
