Wassertor / Watergate

Das Wassertor war eines der Stadttore von Youghal und der einzige Zugang von der Stadt zum Hafen. Alle Händler und Seeleute mussten auf dem Weg zu oder von ihren Schiffen durch dieses Tor. Auch Oliver Cromwell, der mit seiner Armee in Youghal Quartier bezogen hatte, verließ die Stadt im Mai 1651 durch dieses Tor. Es wurde danach von den Einheimischen "Cromwells Bogen" genannt. Der heute noch sichtbare Bogen ist jedoch nur eine Replik aus dem 19. Jahrhundert.

The Water Gate was one of the town gates of Youghal and the only way to access the port from the town. All merchants and sailors had to pass it on their way to or from their ships. Also Oliver Cromwell, who had taken quarter in Youghal with his army, left the town in May 1651 through this gate. It was then called "Cromwell's Arch" by the townsfolk. The still visible arch however is a reconstruction from the 19^th century.
