Lahinch

Die Eröffnung der West Clare Eisenbahn 1887 brachte viele Touristen nach Lahich (Leath Inse - Halbinsel) und machte aus dem Fischerdorf ein beliebtes Seebad. Auch nach der Schließung der Eisenbahn 1961 blieben die Touristen Lahinch treu, das heute besonders für Surfer ein Hauptziel ist.

Im May 1934 war Lahinch Schauplatz eines besonderen Ereignisses (zumindest besonders genug, dass wir auf Schautafeln darauf hingewiesen werden): Die Flugpioniere George Pond und Cesare Sabelli versuchten den ersten Non-Stopp-Flug von New York nach Rom. Technische Probleme, schlechtes Wetter und Treibstoffmangel zwangen sie aber zu einer Notlandung auf einem Feld in der Nähe von Lahinch. Die Besitzer der Farm versorgten die beiden Piloten nach dem etwa 30 stündigen Flug erstmal mit Essen, bevor die nach Lahich gebracht wurden. Nach einer Woche war das Flugzeug repariert und der Flug konnte fortgesetzt werden.

The opening of the West Clare Railway in 1887 brought many tourists to Lahinch (Leath Inse - peninsula) and made the fishing village to a favoured seaside resort. Even after the closure of the railway in 1961 the tourists stayed true to Lahinch, that today is especially a primary destination for surfers.

In May 1934 Lahinch was the stage for another special event (at least special enough to be mentioned on the info panels): The two flight pioneers George Pond and Cesare Sabelli tried the first non-stop flight from New York to Rome. Technical problems, bad weather and lack of fuel forced them to make an emergency landing on a field close to Lahinch. The owners of the farm provided the two pilots with the first food after starting their about 30 hours flight before they were brought to Lahinch. A week later the aeroplane was repaired and the flight could continue.
