Die Gegend um Milltown Malbay (Sráid na Cathrach - Straße des steinernen Ringforts) war schon vor langer Zeit besiedelt, aber die Stadt etablierte sich erst Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts als der damalige Grundherr Thomas Moroney das Atlantic Hotel errichten ließ, das sich das "größte Hotel der Britischen Inseln" nannte und zum beliebten Ziel des britischen Adels wurde. Zu dieser Zeit gab es in der Stadt fünf Mühlen. Während der Großen Hungersnot wurden viele Bewohner von der Familie Moroney delogiert, danach verlangten die Moroneys Wuchermieten. Das führte zum Boykott der Familie durch die Bevölkerung, auch wenn sie dafür in Haft kamen. Nach der Unabhängigkeit Irlands blieben die britischen Adeligen aus, das Atlantic Hotel musste 1930 zusperren. Doch seine Bedeutung als beliebtes Touristenziel hat Milltown Malbay behalten.
The area around Milltown Malbay (Sráid na Cathrach - street of the stone ringfort) had been occupied since a long time ago, but the town was established just at the beginning of the 19th century when the landlord Thomas Moroney had built the Atlantic Hotel. It claimed to be the "biggest hotel of the British Islands" and became a favourite destination of the British gentry. At those times there were five mills in the town. During the Great Famine many tenants were evicted by the family Moroney, afterwards the Moroneys rack-rented them. That led to a boycott against the family by the inhabitants, even when it meant prison for them. After the independence of Ireland the British gentry stayed away, the Atlantic Hotel had to close down in 1930. Nonetheless, Milltown Malbay kept its important as a favourite tourist destination.
