Rathaus / City Hall

1888 verlieh Königin Victoria Belfast das Stadtrecht. Der Stadtrat beschloss, ein neues Rathaus im neu-Barocken Stil zu bauen, das den neuen gehobenen Status besser repräsentieren konnte als das alte Gebäude. Das neue Rathaus wurde 1906 fertiggestellt. Die großen Räume sind mit Marmor, Stuck, Statuen und bunten Glasfenstern verziert. Die Szenen auf den Fensters wurden aus den Legenden (der Rinderraub von Cooley), der Geschichte (die Große Hungersnot) und hoffentlich auch aus der Zukunft (Katholiken und Protestanten stehen zusammen) Ulsters genommen.

In 1888 Queen Victoria granted city status to Belfast. The city council decided to build a new city hall in Baroque revival style that could better represent the new elevated status than the old building. The new city hall was completed in 1906. The spacious rooms are decorated with marble, mouldings, statues and stained glass windows. The scenes on the windows were taken from legends (The Cattle Raid of Cooley), history (The Great Famine) and hopefully also the future (Catholics and Protestants standing together) of Ulster.
