Die Gegend um Thurles (Durlas Éile, Festung von Éile) kam um 1200 in den Besitz der Anglo-Normannischen Familie Butler. Zur Befestigung der Stadt ließ James Butler, der 4. Graf von Ormond, ca. 1450 zwei Burgen erbauen: Bridge Castle im Osten bei der Brücke über den Fluss Suir und Black Caste im Westen.
About 1200 the area around Thurles (Durlas Éile, strong fort of Éile) came into the possession of the Butler family. To fortify the town James Butler, 4th Earl of Ormond, had built two castles around 1450: The Bridge Castle in the east at the brdige over the River Suir and the Black Castle in the west.
