Donohill Motte

(2012-08-25)

Donohill (Dún Eochaille - the fort of the yew wood) was built around 1300 as a typical Norman fortress with motte (hill with the ruler's seat) and bailey (fortified village beside it).

Three hundred years later the armed forces of O'Sullivan Beare during their retreat towards the north passed Donohill and being hungry attacked it. Although the O'Dwyer clan defended the town as good as they could, it was conquered and especially the pantries were pillaged.
