Boa Island ist eine Insel im nördlichen Teil des Lower Lough Erne. Dort stehen auf dem Caldragh Friedhof zwei Statuen aus vor- oder frühchristlicher Zeit. Wer sie geschaffen hat oder was genau sie darstellen, ist nicht geklärt. Vermutlich sind es keltische Gottheiten.
Das bemerkenswerte an der großen Figur (rechts in linken Bild und im rechten Bild) ist, dass sie auf beiden Seiten Gesichter hat. Sie wird daher nach dem römischen zweiköpfigen Gott Janus benannt. Neben ihr lehnt der originale Sockel, auf dem noch die Hände der Figur zu erkennen sind.
Die kleinere der beiden Figuren (links im linken Bild) wurde auf der Insel Lusty Beg gefunden und hierher gebracht. Vor ihr liegen einige Münzen auf einem flachen Stein. Es scheint, als ob die Verehrung keltischer Gottheiten nicht in der Vergangenheit endete.
Boa Island is an isle in the northern part of Lower Lough Erne. There stand two statues in the Caldragh cemetery that come from pre- or early Christian times. Who made them or what exactly they represent, is not clarified. Maybe they are Celtic deities.
The remarkable thing of the bigger figure (on the right in the left picture and on the right picture) is that it has faces on both sides. Therefore it is named after the Roman two-faced god Janus. Beside it leans the original socket on which the hands of the figure can be recognised.
The smaller of the two figures (on the left in the left picture) was found on the isle Lusty Beg and brought to this place. In front of it on a flat stone lie some coins. It seems that the worship of Celtic deities is not a thing of the past.
