Bridgetown Priorat / Bridgetown Priory

Um 1210 gründeten die Augustiner das Priorat zur Hl. Maria in Bridgetown auf Land, das ihnen von Alexander FitzHugh geschenkt wurde. In der Mitte des 16. Jahrhundert wurde das Priorat unter Heinrich VIII. aufgelöst, die Mönche lebten hier aber noch eine Weile. Am Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts waren vom Priorat nur mehr Ruinen übrig.

Die makaberste Geschichte des Priorats ist die von einer armen Frau, die in den 1830ern mit ihren beiden Katzen in einem der Gräber wohnte und von der lokalen Bevölkerung mit Nahrung versorgt wurde.

Around 1210 the Augustines founded the Priory of St. Mary on land in Bridgetown that was gifted to them by Alexander FitzHugh. In the middle of the 16th century the priory was suppressed under Henry VIII., however the monks remained here for a while. By the end of the 18th century the priory had fallen into ruins.

The most macabre story of the priory is from the 1830s when a poor women and her two cats lived in one of the tombs, being supplied with food by the local people.
