Die Kathedrale zum Hl. Colman dominiert die Skyline von Cobh - kein Wunder, sie ist mit über 90 Metern die höchste Kirche Irlands. Über den Hl. Colman, der im 6. Jahrhundert gelebt hat, gibt es nur wenige gesicherte Quellen. Er gilt als Gründer des Klosters in Cloyne (Cluain) und ist der Schutzheilige der Diözese von Cloyne, zu der auch Cobh gehört. Mit dem Bau der Kathedrale zu seinen Ehren wurde 1868 begonnen, Probleme mit der Finanzierung und der Projektplanung verzögerten die Fertigstellung bis 1919. Als Vorbild für den Bau dienten die gotischen Kathedralen Frankreichs und die Fülle an Details, die wir zu sehen bekommen ist wirklich erstaunlich. Überall gibt es Figuren und Verzierungen, von der riesigen Glasfensterrosette bis zu kleinen Scheusalen, die sich in engen Winkeln ducken. Es würde vermutlich Tage dauern, sich all die kunstvoll gearbeiteten Elemente genau anzusehen. Die akustische Untermalung der oppulenten Ausstattung bleibt uns leider versagt, da sie nur zu besonderen Gelegenheiten zu hören ist: Das Turmglockenspiel ist das einzige In Irland und mit 49 Glocken das größte der Britischen Inseln.
St. Colman's Cathedral dominates the skyline of Cobh - no wonder, it is after all with over 90 metres the talles church in Ireland. There are little secure sources about St. Colman, who lived in the 6th century. He is presumed to have founded the monastery in Cloyen (Cluain) and is the Patron Saint of the Diocese of Cloyne, to which Cobh belongs. The building of the cathedral in his honour was started in 1868. Problems with the fundings and the project planning delayed the completion until 1919. The Gothic cathedrals of France were used as model for the building and the abundance of details that we get to see are really astounding. There are figures and decorations everywhere, from the huge stained glass rose window to the small gargoyles cowering in narrow corners. It would take us days to explore all the elaborately worked items in detail. Alas, the acustic background to all the opulent endowment is denied to us, as it can only be heared on special occasions: The carillon is the only one in Ireland and with 49 bells the largest one of the British Isles.
