Die St. Patrick Straße wurde in den 1780ern angelegt. Sie verläuft durch das Zentrum von Cork und ist eine lebhafte Einkaufsstraße. Ihre Seitenstraßen sind meist Fußgängerzonen, mit vielen kleinen Geschäften und Restaurants und Bars, die für das leibliche Wohl der Besucher sorgen.
Pater Theobald Mathew (1790 - 1856) war ein katholischer Priester, der in der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts eine Abstinenzbewegung gründete und leitete. Diese hatte in Irland enormen Zulauf und breitete sich danach auch in England und Schottland aus. Seine Arbeit und die seiner Mitstreiter rettete nicht nur viele Leben vor dem Tod durch Alkohol, sondern senkte auch deutlich die Anzahl der mit Alkoholsucht verbundenen Verbrechen. 1864 wurde ihm zu Ehren eine Statue in der St. Patrick Straße aufgestellt.
St. Patrick's Street was constructed in the 1780s. It runs through the centre of Cork and is a lively shopping street. Its side alleys are mostly pedestrian zones with small shops and restaurants and bars that take care of the corporal welfare of the visitors.
Father Theobald Mathew (1790 - 1856) was a Catholic priest who founded and led a temperance movement in the middle of the 19th century. In Ireland the movement drew an enormous crowd to it and then spread to England and Scottland. His work and that of his fellow campaigners did not only save many lives from death by alcohol, but also considerably reduced crimes related to alcoholism. In 1864 a statue to honour Father Mathew was erected at St. Patrick's Street.
