Dunluce Burg / Dunluce Castle

Im 13. Jahrhundert erbaute der Normanne Richard Óg de Burgh auf einer Klippe vor der Küste Dunluce Castle (Dún Libhse), das nur durch eine Brücke mit dem Festland verbunden ist. Die Burg war ab ca. 1500 im Besitz der Familie MacQuillan und wurde 50 Jahre später von den Schottischen MacDonnells erobert. Dunluce wurde in den folgenden Jahrhunderten mehrfach belagert und eingenommen, sowohl von Gälischen Clans, als auch von Englischen Truppen. Und je nach politischer Lage verloren die MacDonnells die Burg oder bekamen sie rückerstattet. Im späten 17. Jahrhundert war die Burg jedoch schon so verfallen, dass die MacDonnells nach Glenarm Castle zogen. Dunluce ist seit 1928 in der Obhut des Staates.
In the 13th century the Norman Richard Óg de Burgh built Dunluce Castle (Dún Libhse) on a cliff by the coast, which can only be reached by a bridge. From about 1500 onwards the castle was property of the Clan MacQuillan, only 50 years later the Scottish MacDonnells conquered the castle. In the centuries to follow Dunluce was besieged and seized by Gaelic clans as well as Britisch troops. And depending on the political situation the MacDonnells lost the castle or it was restituted to them. In the late 17th century the castle had fallen into so bad a state the the MacDonnells moved to Glenarm Castle. Dunluce has been in state care since 1928.
