Antrim Schlossgaerten / Antrim Castle Gardens

Als die Anglo-Normannen um 1200 n. Chr. Irland eroberten, bauten sie zur Befestigung große Erdhügel, Motte genannt. Die Motte in Antrim wurde von John de Courcy, Earl of Ulster errichtet.

Im 17. Jahrundert erbauten Sir Hugh Clotworthy und dann sein Sohn John ein Schloss neben der Motte. Das Schloss brannte 1922 ab - ob durch Unachtsamkeit während eines Balls oder durch Brandstiftung aus politischen Motiven blieb ungeklärt. 1970 wurden die Reste aus Sicherheitsgründen abgetragen, nur mehr ein paar Wände und der Italienische Turm blieben erhalten.

When the Anglo-Normans conquered Ireland around 1200 A.D. they built large earthen mounts, called Motte, for fortification. The Motte in Antrim was erected by John de Courcy, Earl of Ulster.

In the 17^th century Sir Hugh Clotworthy and then his son John build a castle beside the Motte. The castle burnt down in 1922 - because of carlessness during a ball or because of arsoning for political motives was never disclosed. In 1970 the remains were remove for security reasons except for a few walls and the Italian Tower.
