Grab von Pater John Murphy / Grave of Fr. John Murphy

(2019-10-05)

At the beginning ot the rebellion of 1798 Father John Murphy requested his community to lay down their arms. But when he expirienced the hardness the British used against the Irish, he became leader of a group of rebels. In a total disaccordance to his function as priest, he was then involved with acts of atrocity himself. After his arrest, he was tortured to death and burnt. His remains are buried in the graveyard of Ferns. The song "At Boolavogue" tells of his deeds and death.
