Ferns Burg / Ferns Castle
König Diarmuid MacMurrough soll hier seine Festung gehabt haben. In den 1220ern erbaute Graf William Marshal die erste Steinburg, deren Überreste heute noch stehen. In den 1340ern wurde die Burg bei einem Überfall der irischen Clans abgebrannt, von 1360 bis 1536 wurde die Stadt und die Burg von der Familie Kavanagh beherrscht. Danach war es Sitz der britischen Statthalter, bis es unter Oliver Cromwell endgültig zerstört wurde.
It is said that King Diarmuid MacMurrough had once his stronghold on this site. In the 1220s Earl William Marshal built the first stone castle, of which remains still stand. In the 1340s the castle was burnt by Irish clans, from 1360 to 1536 the Kavanagh family ruled the town and the castle. Afterwards it was seat of British governors until it was finally destroyed under Oliver Cromwell.
