Ferns (Fearna, alder trees) was founded around 600 by St. Aidan (Áedan, also named Edan, Mogue (Mo Aodh Óg) or Máedóc). In the 12th century the Diocese Ferns was established and therefore the town became the seat of the bishop (the Anglican bishops still reside here, the Catholic bishops moved to St. Aidans Kathedrale in Enniscorthy). In the 13th century the Normans built a castle in Ferns. The town was for some time the capital of the Kingdom of Leinster, even of whole Ireland, until it was destroyed by a fire. Afterwards it did not reclaim its former importance.
