Hook Head

Im 5. Jahrhundert errichtete der Mönch Hl. Dubhan auf der Spitze der Halbinsel Hook Head (Rinn Duáin) ein Leuchtfeuer, um das sich die Mönche seines Klosters während der nächsten 700 Jahre kümmerten. Im frühen 13. Jahrhundert ließ William Marshall, Earl of Pembroke an dieser Stelle einen Leuchtturm errichten, um den sich ebenfalls die Mönche kümmerten - bis sie von Cromwell vertrieben wurden.

Heute ist Hook Lighthouse der am zweitlängsten sich in Betrieb befindliche Leuchtturm der Welt. Als er 1996 automatisiert wurde, wurde er der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht und enthält ein Museum, das durch die Geschichte des Leuchtturms führt.

In the 5^th century the monk St. Dubhan established a light beacon at the tip of the peninsula Hook Head (Rinn Duáin), which monks from his monastery tended to for the next 700 years. In the early 13^th century William Marshall, Earl of Pembroke, had a lighthouse erected at this site, which also was tended to by the monks - until they were driven away by Cromwell.

Today Hook Lighthouse is the second-oldest still working lighthouse all over the world. When it was fully automated in 1996, it was opened to the public and holds a museum, which guides through the history of the lighthouse.
