Wexford

Franziskanerkloster / Franciscan Friary

(2019-10-04)

The order of the Franciscans came to Wexford in the middle of the 13th century. After the suppression of all monasteries in the middle of the 16th century, the friary fell into ruins. Nothing of it remains to this day. The Franciscans went into hiding, until they opened a small chapel at the beginning of the 17th century. Under Cromwell several Franciscans were murdered and the remaining ones were dispersed. But a few years later they returned. In 1690 the Franciscans replaced the chapel by a church that was the only Catholic church during the long time of opression of Catholics. Shortly after 1800 the still existing friary was built. In 2007 it was handed over to the Conventual Franciscans.
