John Barry Statue
John Barry (1745-1803) wurde im County Wexford geboren. Als Katholik litt er schon in seiner Kindheit unter der britischen Herrschaft. Als begeisteter Seefahrer, diente er sich vom Schiffsjungen bis zum Kapitän von Handelsschiffen empor. Zu Beginn des Bürgerkriegs trat Barry der Kontinentalmarine bei und kämpfte erfolgreich gegen die Briten. 1794 wurde Barry zum ersten Oberbefehlshaber der US Navy befördert.
1956 schenkten die USA der Stadt Wexford eine Bronzestatue von John Barry, die am Crescent Quay aufgestellt wurde.
John Barry (1745-1803) was born in County Wexford. As a Catholic he suffered under the British regime since his childhood. As an enthusiastic seafarer, he served his way up from cabin boy to the captain of trading ships. At the beginning of the Independence War, Barry joined the Continental Navy and fought successfully against the British. In 1794 Barry was commissioned as the first commodore of the US Navy.
In 1956 the USA presented a bronze statue of John Barry to the town of Wexford that was erected on Crescent Quay.
