Die Stadt Wexford (Loch Garman) geht - wie viele Städte an der Ostküste - auf eine Wikingersiedlung aus dem 9. Jahrhundert zurück ("Waesfjord" = der Hafen der schlammigen Sandbänke), doch Funde belegen, dass die Gegend schon vor über 6000 Jahren bewohnt war. Im 12. Jahrhundert wurde Wexford von den Anglo-Normannen eingenommen und zu einer Festung ausgebaut. Als Hochburg der Konföderation Irlands in der ersten Hälfte des 15. Jahrhunderts, wurde Wexford von den Truppen Oliver Cromwells eingenommen und fast vollständig zerstört. Bei der Revolution 1798 war die Stadt wieder Schauplatz blutiger Massaker.

2019 verbringen wir eine Woche in der Grafschaft Wexford und nehmen uns auch viel Zeit, um seine Hauptstadt zu besichtigen. Wir holen uns einen Stadtplan bei der Touristeninformation im Paul Quay und folgen dem Kultureerbepfad.

The town of Wexford (Loch Garman) can be traced - like many other towns on the east coast - back to a Vikings settlement in the 9^th century ("Waesfjord" = harbour of the mud flats), but findings prove that the area was already inhabited over 6000 years ago. In the 12^th century Wexford was conquered by Anglo-Normans and fortified. As a stronghold of the Confederate Ireland in the first half of the 15^th century, Wexford was conquered and almost completely destroyed by the troops of Oliver Cromwell. The town was again the scene of bloody massacres during the revolution in 1798.

In 2019 we stay for a week in the County Wexford and reserved much time for visiting its countytown. We get a town map at the tourist information at Paul Quay and follow the heritage trail.
