Joseph Leeson (1711-1783) erbte im Alter von 30 Jahren von seinem Vater ein Vermögen. Mit diesem Geld kaufte er das Anwesen von Russborough (damals noch Russellstown genannt) und beauftragte den Architekten Richard Castle mit dem Bau eines Hauses im Palladischen Stil und dem Anlegen eines Landschaftsgartens um das Haus herum. (Der aus Deutschland stammende Castle hatte schon an Häusern wie die von Belvedere, Westport, Powerscourt und Leinster House gearbeitet.) Die Bauarbeiten waren Mitte der 1750er abgeschlossen. Seitlich an das Haus schließen die Wirtschaftsgebäude an, deren Innenhöfe durch je einen Torbogen betreten werden kann.
1952 kaufte Sir Alfred Beit das Anwesen und bewahrte im Haus seine umfangreiche Kunstsammlung auf. Heute gehört das Haus und das Anwesen der Alfred Beit Stiftung, die es auch betreibt.

Joseph Leeson (1711-1783) inherited a fortune from his father at the age of 30. With the money he bought Russborough estate (then called Russellstown) and commissioned the architect Richard Castle to build a house in Palladian style and to create a landscaped garden around the house. (Castle, who originally came from Germany, had already worked on houses like those in Belvedere, Westport, Powerscourt and Leinster House). The construction works were finished in the middle of the 1750s. On both sides of the house estate buildings connect to the house, their inner yards can be accessed through arched gateways.
In 1952 Sir Alfred Beit bought the estate and kept his considerable art collection in the house. Today the house and the estate are owned and managed by the Alfred Beit Foundation.
