St. Mochorog founded here a monasitc community in the 7th century that was dissolved under Henry VIII. Afterwards the territory around Kilmacurragh (Cill mo Churra, the church of Saint Mochorog) was in the possession of the Anglo-Norman Acton family and encompassed more than 2000 hectars. The weather and the soil provided the ideal conditions to grow plants from the Himalaya and the southern hemisphere. In 1854 the owner Thomas Acton IV began a cooperation with the National Botanical Garden in Dublin. In 1996 21 hectars of the area around the mansion became part of the Botanical Garden and are open for the public.
