Zisterzienserabtei / Cistercian Abbey

Am Ufer der Slaney gründete Dermont MacMurrough, König von Leinster, im Jahre 1148 eine Zisterzienser Abtei. Doch Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts wurden die Mönche - wie bei vielen andere Klöstern auch - durch die repressive Politik von Heinrich VIII. gezwungen die Abtei aufzugeben.
At the banks of the Slaney, Dermont MacMurrough, king of Leinster, founded a Cistercian abbey in the year 1148. But in the middle of the 16th century, the monks had to leave the abbey, just like it happened in many other monasteries, forced by the repressive politics of Henry VIII.
