Tyrrellspass

Die Familiy Tyrell kam mit der Normannischen Invasion nach Irland und herrschten über eine Baronie in Westmeath. Etwa 1410 ließen sie eine Burg an der einzigen Passage durch das umliegende Sumpfgebiet bauen. Im 16. Jahrhundert entwickelte sich darum eine Siedlung, die den Namen Tyrrellspass (Bealach an Tirialaigh) bekam. Im Neunjährigen Krieg (1593 - 1603) kämpfte Richard Tyrell an der Seite von Hugh O'Neill gegen die englischen Truppen und gewann die Schlacht bei Tyrellspass. Der Krieg jedoch wurde verloren und Tyrell unterwarf sich den Engländern. 1650 wurde die Burg von den Truppen Oliver Cromwells eingenommen und an die Familie Rochfort, die späteren Grafen von Belvedere, verkauft. Danach hatte die Burg verschiedene Besitzer. In den 1990ern wurde das Gebäude renoviert und gehört heute zu einem Restaurant.
The family Tyrell came to Ireland with the Norman invasion and ruled over a barony in Westmeath. Around 1410 they had a castle built on the only passage through the surrounding bogland. In the 16th century a village developed around the castle that got the name Tyrrellspass (Bealach an Tirialaigh). In the Nine Year's War (1593 - 1603) Richard Tyrell fought on the side of Hugh O'Neill against the English troops and won the Battle of Tyrellspass. The war however was lost and Tyrell subjected to the English. In 1650 the castle was conquered by the troops of Oliver Cromwell and sold to the family Rochfort, the later Earls of Belvedere. Afterwards the castle had many owners. In the 1990ies the building was renovated and now belongs to a restaurant.
