Ardmore

Rundturm und Abtei / Roundtower and Abbey

(2015-05-28)

In Ardmore (Aird Mhór - great height) St. Declan founded the first Christian settlement of Ireland in the 5th century - half a century before St. Patrick was born. In the 9th century at this place an abbey was built that was extended perforce with a round tower in the 12th century. It is about 30 metres in height and is one of the best-preserved examples in Ireland. A striking feature are the three clearly visible rings, at each of which the diameter of the tower is suddenly reduced.
