Reginald's Tower

Die Stadt Waterford (Port Lairge) wurde 853 von Wikinger an der Mündung der Suir gegründet. 1170 von den Normannen eingenommen und befestigt, wurde Waterford im Mittelalter zu einem blühenden Hafen, bis es Mitte des 17. Jahrhunderts von den Engländern unterworfen wurde. Schon im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert entstand hier eine berühmte Glasindustrie, die nach dem 2. Weltkrieg wieder auflebte.

Der Reginald's Tower wurde angeblich um 1000 gebaut und ist nach Reginal McIvor, dem damaligen Gouverneur von Waterford, benannt. Der Turm diente ab dem 15. Jahrhundert als Münze, ab dem 19. Jahrhundert als Gefängnis, und heutzutage als Heimat des Stadtmuseums.

The city of Waterford (Port Lairge) was founded in 853 by Vikings on the mouth of the Suir River. It was conquered by the Normans in 1170, then fortified and became a blossoming harbour in medieval times, until the middle of the 17^th century, when it was subjected by the English. As early as in the 18^th and 19^th century famous glass manufactories developed in Waterford, which were revived after the Second World War.

Reginald's Tower was allegedly built around 1000 and is named after Reginal McIvor, then governor of Waterford. The tower was used as mint in the 15^th century, as prison since the 19^th century, and is nowadays the home of the city museum.
