Böse Zungen behaupten, dass die Wikinger in Irland erst selbst Städte bauen mussten, damit sie welche überfallen konnten. Und tatsächlich waren es Wikingerlager entlang der Küste, die sich zu den ältesten Städten entwickelten: Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Waterford, Wexford. Unter der Herrschaft der Anglo-Normannen wurden immer mehr befestigte Städte gebaut. Bei der Eroberung Irlands durch die Truppen Oliver Cromwells (1649 - 1653) erwiesen sich die Stadtmauern aber meist als unzureichend. Nach dem Krieg der zwei Könige (1688 - 1691) gab es eine lange Zeit in Irland, in der es keine gewalttätigen Auseinandersetzungen gab. In dieser Zeit verfielen die meisten Stadtmauern und wurde später abgetragen. Die Industrielle Revolution im 19. Jahrhundert lockte immer mehr Menschen in die Städte. Der wirtschaftliche Aufschwung im späten 20. Jahrhundert brachte eine weitere Landflucht mit sich.

Heute folgen die Iren dem globalen Trend und etwa 2/3 der Bevölkerung lebt in Städten, mit den (ebenfalls global beobachtbaren) Problemen von zu vielen Menschen auf zu engem Raum.

Sharp tongues say that the Vikings had to built their own towns in Ireland in order to have any to plunder. And actually it were Vikings bases along the coast that developed to the oldest towns: Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Waterford, Wexford. Under the rulership of the Anglo-Normans more and more fortified towns were built. During the conquest of Ireland by the troops of Oliver Cromwell (1649 - 1653) these city walls often proved to be insufficient. After the Williamite War (1688 - 1691) there was a long time in Ireland without violent conflicts. During this time most city walls decayed and were later demolished. The Industrial Revolution in the 19^th century lured more and more people to live in towns. The economic uprise at the end of the 20^th century caused further rural depopulation.

Today the Irish follow the global trend and about 2/3 of the population live in towns, with the (also globally observable) problems of too many people on too little space.
