Hl. Columba / St. Columba

Der Hl. Columba - auch Colmcille (Taube der Kirche) genannt - wurde 521 in Gartan geboren. Er wuchs in Glencolmcille (Tal des Colmcille) auf, das später nach ihm benannt wurde. In jungen Jahren besuchte er die Klosterschule von Movilla bei Newtownards. Nach Abschluss der Schule trat Columba in das Kloster von Clonard ein, wurde Mönch und dann zum Priester gesalbt. Nach der Pestepidemie von 544 kehrte Columba nach Ulster zurück. Von dort aus missionierte er Irland und gründete mehrere Klöster, wie in Derry, Durrow, Kells und Swords.

Die Legenden berichten, dass Columba um 560 in einen Streit mit St. Finnian von Moville verwickelt war, der um den Besitz einer von Columba angefertigten Kopie eines Psalters von Finnian ging (der erste Copyright-Streit der Geschichte). Der Streit soll in einen bewaffneten Konflikt (Battle of Cúl Dreimhne - der Kampf um das Buch) mit vielen Toten ausgeartet sein. (Diese Kopie soll der Cathach von St. Columba sein.) Columba wurde für den Konflikt verantwortlich gemacht und musste Irland verlassen.

563 ging Columba mit zwölf Gefährten in das Königreich Dál Riata, das heute Teil von Schottland ist. Die Brüder ließen sich auf der Insel Iona nieder, wo sie ein Kloster gründeten. Von hier aus missionierten sie die Pikten und es werden über Columba viele Wunder berichtet. So soll er auch einen Mitbruder vor einem Monster im Loch Ness gerettet haben - die erste schriftlich Erwähnung überhaupt. Columba starb 597 auf Iona. Seine sterblichen Überreste sollen aber in Downpatrick begraben sein, damit die alte Prophezeiung erfüllt wird, dass Patrick, Brigid und Columba (die drei Schutzheiligen Irlands) in einem Grab zusammenliegen.

St. Columba - also named Colmcille (dove of the church) - was born in 521 in Gartan. He grew up in Glencolmcille (valley of Colmcille), that later was named after him. Legends tell that around 560 Columba was involved in a quarrel with St. Finnian of Moville about a copy of a psalter of Finnian that Columba had created (the first copyright dispute in history). The quarrel is said to have gotten out of hand and turned into an armed conflict (Battle of Cúl Dreimhne - Battle of the Book) with many deaths. (This copy is supposed to be the Cathach of St. Columba.) Columba was made responsible for the conflict and had to leave Ireland.

In 563 Columba and twelve companions went to the Kingdom Dál Riata, that is now a part of Scotland. The brothers settled on the Isle of Iona and founded a monastery. From here they evangelised the Picts and many wonders by Columba are reported. He is said to have saved a brother from a monster in Lough Ness - the first written mention at all. Columba died in 597 on Iona. His mortal remains however are said to have been buried in Downpatrick to fulfill an old prophecy that Patrick, Brigid and Columba (the three patron saints of Ireland) will be laid together in one grave.
