Rundtuerme / Round Towers

The Irish Times nennt Rundtürme "Irlands einzigen einzigartigen Beitrag zur Weltarchitektur", da Rundtürme (mit nur drei Ausnahmen) ausschließlich in Irland gefunden werden können. Sie wurden in der Zeit vom 10. bis zum 12. Jahrhundert gebaut und waren der Glockenturm einer Kirche oder eines Klosters (die irische Sprache nennt sie Cloigtheach - Glockenhaus). Über sonstige Verwendung als Speicher für die Klosterschätze, Ausschauturm, Zuflucht bei Angriffen oder ähnliches gibt es eine rege Diskussion, aber belegt ist nichts davon. Etwa 65 Rundtürme sind heute noch zumindest zum Teil erhalten.

The Irish Times calls round towers "Ireland’s only unique contribution to world architecture", as (with the exception of three towers) they can only be found in Ireland. They were built in the time from the 10th to the 12th century and were the bell tower of a church or a monastery (the Irish language calls them Cloigtheach - bell house). About other usage like the storage room for the monastery treasures, look-out towers, refuge during attacks or similar things there is a lively discussion, but nothing of it is documented. About 65 round towers are still at least partially preserved.
