Ring of Kerry

Die Straße um die Iveragh (Uíbh Rátchach)-Halbinsel, auch Ring of Kerry genannt, führt um die Gebirgskette, deren höchster Berg der Carrauntoohil (1038 m) ist, herum, meist direkt an der Küste entlang. Die vom Golfstrom begünstigte Halbinsel bietet üppige Vegetation und viel schöne Aussichten, sowohl in das Landesinnere als auch auf das offene Meer hinaus. Fast parallel dazu verläuft der für Wanderer besonders empfehlenswerte Kerry Way. Tipp: Wegen des Linksverkehrs ist es besser den Ring of Kerry im Uhrzeigersinn zu fahren, da alle Parkbuchten auf der Seite der Straße sind, die der Küste näher ist.

Die N70 (die Straßennummer des Ring of Kerry) führt zwischen Waterville und Cahersiveen nicht an der Küste entlang. Wer mehr sehen will, biegt von Waterville kommend auf die R567 und dann die R566 ab. Bei Ballinskelligs beginnt der Skellig Ring, der noch zusätzliche schöne Ausblicke und interessante Sehenswürdigkeiten bietet. Das andere Ende des Skellig Rings und der R566 ist in Portmagee. Von dort führt die R565 wieder zurück zum Ring of Kerry.

The road around the Iveragh (Uíbh Rátchach) peninsula, also known as Ring of Kerry, leads around the highest mountain of the island, the Carrauntoohil (1038 m), mostly along the coastline. The peninsula that benefits from the Gulf Stream, offers amply vegetation and lots of beautiful views, into the land as well as out to the open sea. Almost parallel to it, the Kerry Way runs, which is highly recommended for hikers. Hint: Due to the left-hand traffic it is better to drive the Ring of Kerry clockwise, as all parking bays are on the side of the road that is closer to the coast.

The N70 (streetnumber of the Ring of Kerry) goes between Waterville and Cahersiveen not along the coast. Whoever wants to see more, turns - coming from Waterville - onto the R567 and then onto the R566. At Ballinskelligs starts the Skellig Ring that offers even more great views and interesting sights. The other end of the Skellig Ring and of the R566 is in Portmagee. From there the R565 goes back to the Ring of Kerry.
