Irrgaerten und Labyrinthe / Mazes and Labyrinths

Das klassische Labyrinth geht auf die Zeit der alten Griechen zurück. Durch dieses führt nur ein Weg vom Eingang zur Mitte, es gibt keine Abzweigungen. In einem Irrgarten gibt es aber viele Abzweigungen mit komplexen Wegführungen, die es schwer bis unmöglich machen sollte, den Irrgarten zu durchschreiten. Der berühmteste Irrgarten ist jener, den Daedalus für König Minos in Knossos erbaut hat, um den Minotaurus gefangen zu halten.

Labyrinthe finden sich häufig bei oder in religiösen Gebäuden, auch als Sinnbild des Lebensweges, der oft unerwartete Wendungen macht, die vom erwünschten Ziel wegbringen, aber dann endlich dieses Ziel erreicht.

Irrgärten - speziell Heckenirrgärten - wurden ab dem 16. Jahrhundert populär und überall in Europa errichtet. Und so finden wir auch in Irland an vielen Orten Irrgärten, die wir natürlich durchgehen müssen. Besonders toll ist der Irrgarten im Aistear Park in Mountshannon: Hier gibt es auch Brücken, die dem Irrgarten eine dritte Dimension verleihen.

The classical labyrinth dates back to the time of the old Greeks. Through it leads only one way from the entrance to the middle, there are no branches. In a maze on the other hand there are many branches with complex patterns of ways that should make it hard to impossible to walk throught the maze. The most famous maze was the one built by Daedalus for King Minos in Knossos to keep the Minotaur trapped.

Labyrinths can often be found near or in religious buildings, also as an allegory to the way of life that all too many times makes an unexpected turn leading away from the desired aim, but in the end finally reaching that aim.

Mazes - especially hedge mazes - became popular in the 16^th century and were built all over Europe. And so we find mazes in many locations in Ireland that of course we have to walk through. Especially great is the maze of Aistear Park in Mountshannon: It has bridges, too, that bestow the maze a third dimension.
