Die heutige Landschaft Irlands wurde am Ende der letzten Eiszeit (ca. 30000 - 8000 v. Chr.) geformt. Wandernde Gletscher schliffen Täler aus den Bergen, danach schufen vom Regen gespeiste Flüsse zusätzliche Täler. In den Tälern sammelte sich fruchtbares Erdreich an, das den Bewohnern der Insel ab der Jungsteinzeit (seit ca. 4500 v. Chr.) die Möglichkeit für Ackerbau und Viehzucht gab. Erst die reichliche Versorgung mit Nahrungesmitteln ermöglichte es den Menschen die megalithischen Bauten im Brú na Bóinne (Tal der Boyne) zu schaffen, die heute UNESCO Weltkulturerbe sind. In frühchristlichen Jahrhunderten nutzen Mönche Täler als Rückzugsort, um Einsiedeleien zu gründen, wie z. B. der Hl. Kevin in Glendalough. Zur Zeit der englischen Herrschaft zogen sich Rebellen speziell in die Täler der Wicklow Berge zurück, wo sie für die englischen Soldaten so gut wie unauffindbar waren. Und heutezutage sind Täler beliebte Ausflugsziele für Wanderer.

The current landscape of Ireland was formed at the end of the last Ice Age (about 30000 - 8000 B.C.). Moving glaciers ground valleys into the mountains, afterwards rivers fed by rain created even more valleys. Within the valleys fertile soil accumulated which gave the inhabitants of the isle during the Neolithic Age (from about 4500 B.C.) the possibility for agriculture and cattle breeding. It was this rich supply with food that enabled the people to create the Megalithic buildings in the Brú na Bóinne (valley of the Boyne) that are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In early Christian centuries monks used valleys to retreat and to found hermitages, like St. Kevin in Glendalough. During the time of the English domination rebels drew back into the valleys of the Wicklow Mountains where they were nearly undiscoverable for the English soldiers. And today valleys are favoured leisure destinations for hikers.
