Die erste Festung in Roscrea wurde 1213 von John von England in Auftrag gegeben und bestand aus einem Holzturm mit einem Graben. Um 1280 wurde diese einfache Burg durch einen Steinbau ersetzt. Von 1315 bis 1703 war die Burg fast immer im Besitz der Familie Butler. Im 14. Jahrhundert beherrschte die O'Carroll Familie die Stadt und die Gegend, 1646 wurde die Burg von Owen Roe O'Neill erobert, in den 1650ern von den Truppen Oliver Cromwells besetzt. Das dreistöckige Torhaus wurde im 15. Jahrhundert von James Butler, 4. Graf von Ormonde, als Wohnsitz für die Familie gebaut. Im 19. Jahrhundert wurde die Burg nur mehr als Armeekaserne benutzt. Seit 1908 ein Nationales Denkmal, wurde die Burg 1986 an den Staat übergeben, der das Gebäude wieder in Stand setzen ließ.
The first fortress in Roscrea was ordered by John of England in 1213 and consisted of a wooden tower and a moat. Around 1280 this simple castle was replaced by a stone building. From 1315 to 1703 the castle was almost always a property of the family Butler. In the 14th century the O'Carroll family ruled the town and the area, 1646 the castle was conquered by Owen Roe O'Neill, in the 1650s it was occupied by the troops of Oliver Cromwell. The three story gate house was built in the 15th century by James Butler, 4th Earl of Ormonde, as living place for the family. In the 19th century the castle was only used as army barracks. A National Monument since 1908, the castle was given to the state in 1986, who restored the buildings.
