Die geteilte Stadt Lanesborough-Ballyleague (Béal Átha Liag, Mündung der Furt der Steinplatten) entwickelte sich an einer wichtigen Furt durch den Shannon zwischen den beiden Provinzen Connacht und Meath. Große im Fluss platzierte Steinplatten erleichterten den Übergang. Um 1000 wurde die erste Brücke erbaut. In den 1120ern befestigte der Anglo-Normanne Walter deLacy den Übergang mit einer Burg. Von Brücke und Burg ist nichts geblieben, sogar ihr genauer Standort ist unbekannt. Auf Grund ihrer strategischen Lage waren die Städte immer wieder Schauplätze militärischer Auseinandersetzungen. Mal griffen irische Clans von Connacht her an, mal drangen englische Truppen nach Westen vor. Oder die alteingesessenen katholischen Anglo-Normannischen Landherren bekämpften die protestantischen Gefolgsleute des englischen Königs. In der zweiten Hälfte des 17. Jahrhunderts wurden die Ländereien an George Lane vergeben, in Anerkennung seiner Treue zum Haus Stuart speziell während der Zeit des Commonwealth. Die in Longford liegende Stadt wurde nach ihm in Lanesborough umbenannt.
Wir finden einen Parkplatz bei der Marina in Ballyleague und sehen uns die Stelle an, wo sich der Shannon zum Lough Ree verbreitert.
The split town Lanesborough-Ballyleague (Béal Átha Liag, the mouth of the ford of the flagstones) developed around an important ford over the River Shannon between the provinces Connaught and Meath. Large flagstones placed in the river made crossing easier. Around 1000 the first bridge was built. In the 1120ies the Anglo-Norman Walter de Lacy secured the crossing with a castle. Nothing remains of bridge or castle, not even their locations are known. Due to its strategic position the towns were again and again the scene of military fray. One time Irish clans attacked from Connaught, another time English troops advance into the west. Or the old-established Catholic Anglo-Norman landlords fought the protestant liegeman of the English king. In the second half of the 17th century some land was granted to George Lane in recognition of the loyalty towards the House of Stuart especially during the time of the Commonwealth. The town positioned in Longford was renamed after him to Lanesborough.
We find a parking place at the marina in Ballyleague and visit the spot where the Shannon broadens into Lough Ree.
