Croghan Hill

Es ist schon später Nachmittag, als wir am Croghan Hill (Cnoc Cruacháin) vorbei kommen. Bei der Wanderung auf die Anhöhe von Uisneach hat die Führerin diesen Hügel erwähnt, also bleiben wir am Parkplatz des Gemeindezentrums von Croghan stehen, um auch einen Blick drauf zu werfen. Der erloschene Vulkan ist 234 Meter hoch und gilt in der irischen Mythologie als heiliger Berg. Der Grabhügel aus der Bronzezeit auf seiner Spitze hat sicher zu diesem Mythos beigetragen.

Leider geht der Wanderweg auf den Hügel nicht vom Gemeindezentrum weg und einfach querfeldein wollen wir auch nicht gehen. Aber das nächste Mal kommen wir besser vorbereitet.

It is already late afternoon when we pass Croghan Hill (Cnoc Cruacháin). During the tour up the Hill of Uisneach the guide mentioned the hill and so we stop at the parking place beside the community centre of Croghan to have a look. The extinct volcano is 234 metres high and is regarded as sacred hill in Irish mythology. The burial mound on its top surely contributed to that myth.

Alas, the hiking path up the hill does not start at the community centre and we do not want to walk cross-country. But the next time we come better prepared.
