In the 6th century St. Colmán Eala founded a monastery in Lynally (Lann-Elo). Little is known about the saint that is historically reliable, the year of his death is specified as 611. In the following centuries an annual meeting (a so called Óenach) of high-ranking persons and the clergy of Celtic society was held in the monastery. The last abbot of Lynally is mentioned in the records in 1038. Around that time the old wooden church was replaced by a stone church whose remains still exist to this day.

In the course of the 12th century the Irish-Catholic Church gave up its independence and submitted to the Roman-Catholic Church. This process was completed with the conquest of Ireland by the Anglo-Normans after 1169. The monastery church of Lynally became a daughter church of St. David in Ardnurcher (Horseleap, Co. Weathmeath) which had been founded by the Anglo-Norman Meiler Fitz Henry.

At the beginning of the 15th century the new parish Fir Call (Fear Ceall) was established with St. Colmán's church as parish church. It was therefore enlarged in 1421. In 1693 Fir Call was terminated and the parish Lynally was formed. In 1840 the church was abandoned after the Church of Ireland had built the new St. Bartholomew's Church.

In a vault under the church we see a modern table and chairs. Obviously the church is still in use.
