Clonony Burg / Clonony Castle

Clonony Castle (Caisleán Chluain Damhna) wurde um 1500 vom Clan MacCoghlan gebaut. Die ältesten schriftlichen Belege in den Annalen der Vier Meister berichten von gewaltsamen Auseinandersetzungen der MacCoghlans mit verfeindeten Clans. Unter Heinrich VIII. konvertierte ein Teil des Clans zum Anglikanischem Glauben und übergab die Burg an Heinrich. Dieser gab sie an Thomas Boleyn weiter, als Heinrich Thomas' Tochter Anna begehrte. 1803 wurde in der Nähe der Burg ein Grabstein gefunden, auf dem steht, dass "Elisabeth und Mary Bullyn, Töchter von Thomas Bullyn" bis zu ihrem Tod hier lebten.
Ab dem 17. Jahrhundert hatte die Burg verschiedene Besitzer, von denen Matthew de Renzi und Edmond Maloney an bemerkenswertesten sind. Das Gebäude wurde in dieser Zeit mehrfach erweitert und mit einer Mauer umgeben. Im Unabhängigkeitskrieg (1919 - 1921) wurde der Turm schwer beschädigt. 1940 übernahm der Staat das Anwesen. 2002 erwarben der schottischen Schriftsteller Campbell Armstrong und seine Frau Rebecca die Burg und begannen mit der Renovierung. Campbell verstarb 2013, Rebecca verkaufte die Burg 2022.
Clonony Castle (Caisleán Chluain Damhna) was built around 1500 by the clan MacCoghlan. The oldest written records in the Annals of the Four Masters report of violent conflicts of the MacCoghlans with enemy clans. Under Henry VIII. a part of the clan converted to Anglican believe and handed the castle over to Henry, which in turn gave it to Thomas Boleyn, as Henry coveted Thomas's daughter, Anne. In 1803 a gravestone was found close to the castle, telling that "Elizabeth and Mary Bullyn, daughters of Thomas Bullyn" lived here until they died.
Beginning with the 17th century the castle had various owners, most noteworthy Matthew de Renzi and Edmond Maloney. In that time the building was extended a few times and the bawn wall was built. During the War of Independence (1919 - 1921) the tower was heavily damaged. In 1940 the state took over the care for the estate. In 2002 the Scottish novelist Campbell Armstrong and his wife Rebecca purchased the castle and started its renovation. Campbell passed away in 2013, Rebecca sold the castle in 2022.
