Clonmacnoise

Normannen Burg / Norman Castle

(2016-02-21)

In the year 1169 Richard de Clare (called "Strongbow") and his army or Normans landed in Ireland for the first time and conquered the country by order of King Henry II. of England. 80 years later three-fourth of Ireland was under the ruler ship of the Normans.

In Clonmacnoise (Cluain Mhic Nóis), directly beside the cloister, the Norman John Gray erected a castle in the 13th century. But not much has remained from it to this day.
