An sonnigen Tagen - wie bei unserem Besuch - fließt der Shannon gemütlich vor sich hin. Nach starken Regenfällen kommt es aber immer wieder zu weitläufigen Überschwemmungen, da das Land hier recht flach ist. Kein Wunder, dass zwischen Athlone und Portumna nur wenige Ortschaften direkt am Fluss entstanden sind.
On sunny days - like the one when we visit - the Shannon flows placidly along. But after strong rainfalls again and again extensive floodings occur, as the land here is very flat. No wonder that between Athlone and Portumna only a few villages developed directly along the river.
